Laura Scheuerle

Administrative Assistant at BLOCS

Recently, we sat down with Laura Scheuerle, the newest member of the BLOCS team, to talk about life, parenthood, the value of Catholic education, her new role and what she most loves about being a part of the BLOCS team.

Tell us about your family. What has your experience been with Catholic education?

My four boys attended St. Joe’s Prep. The Prep’s culture of the “brotherhood” has profoundly impacted our entire family. Through their experiences at the Prep, our boys developed long lasting friendships both in the classroom and on the athletic field, a profound sense of accomplishment upon graduation, and a deep pride for their alma mater; a bond they share with fellow alumni from all over the country. The rigorous academics coupled with Prep’s unique culture fully prepared our sons for college, both socially as well as academically.

“Men for and with others” is not just a saying, it is a way of life for them now. They each developed a humility, sense of empathy and a perspective of their place in the world, while realizing the importance of service to others. I feel very blessed that my husband and I were able to give them the gift of a Catholic education and we were a part of their high school experience for more than 14 years through volunteering at 17th and Girard!

What inspires you?

My family inspires me. I felt a tremendous responsibility to expose my children to as many different people and experiences as possible growing up. Life was chaotic with four boys under six, but I am lucky to have healthy children and a husband who shares my goals and values in life. We were both blessed with wonderful parents who instilled those values in us, so it has been easy to ingrain the importance of family upon the boys. I am continually inspired by the gift of perspective that I receive, now learning from my adult children.

What are some projects you’re currently involved with at BLOCS?

As an administrative assistant, I am excited to support everyone in the office—from working with the contractor to spruce up our workspace, to donor stewardship programs, to planning events and board meetings. BLOCS has recently signed on with BoardEffect, a board governance software platform that streamlines the collaboration and meeting process for our board members. As the staff administrator, I’m excited to manage the training and implementation process both for our staff as well as our board.

Tell us about your past experiences with BLOCS?

My husband I have been BLOCS donors for the past five years. The opportunities that BLOCS provides for deserving students at the Prep was significant. The experiences students receive there are enriched by the diversity of the student body; another aspect that makes the Prep so special. The most rewarding aspect of now being a part of the BLOCS team, is knowing that we are making a difference for so many students and their families.
